10 Easy Tricks to Make Your Flowers Last Longer

Nothing brightens a room like fresh flowers. But as much as we love them, cut flowers don’t last forever. At Petals & Leaves, we believe in making every bouquet stay beautiful for as long as possible. That’s why we’re sharing our favorite flower care hacks — simple, effective tips that show you how to keep cut flowers fresh and extend their beauty.

1. Start with a Clean Vase

Always begin your bouquet journey with a spotless vase. Any trace of bacteria will shorten flower life. Wash thoroughly with warm water and mild soap before adding blooms.

2. Trim Stems the Right Way

Cut stems at a 45° angle, removing 2–3 cm. This helps water flow easily, keeping your flowers hydrated.

3. Change Water Regularly

Don’t let flowers sit in stale water. Replace vase water every 1–2 days to make flowers last longer.

4. Keep Flowers Cool

Avoid direct sunlight, heaters, and drafts. A cool, shaded spot is ideal for prolonging freshness.

5. Use Sugar as Food

Adding a teaspoon of sugar to the vase nourishes your blooms and helps them stay vibrant.

6. Add Vinegar or Lemon Juice

A few drops in the vase act as natural antibacterial agents, slowing bacteria growth.

7. Try the Aspirin Trick

Drop one aspirin tablet into the water — a classic hack to make flowers last longer.

8. Mist the Petals

Lightly spray petals with water to prevent them from drying, especially for roses and delicate blooms.

9. Remove Wilting Flowers

Remove any fading stems right away. This prevents bacteria from spreading to healthy flowers.

10. Keep Away from Fruit

Never place flowers near fruit bowls. Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes cut flowers wilt faster.
